The story
Shiroka Laka is one of the most distinctive historic villages in the Rhodope Mountains. It lies along both banks of the Shiroka Laka River and is known for its preserved traditional architecture, cobbled streets, stone bridges, churches and strong musical heritage. Many houses retain the characteristic Rhodope style, with stone construction, wooden elements and projecting upper floors. The village has a remarkable concentration of protected cultural sites, including historic houses, bridges and churches. Shiroka Laka is also closely associated with Rhodope folklore, traditional songs, customs and music. Together with its mountain setting, this gives the village a strong sense of place and makes it one of the most atmospheric cultural destinations in the central Rhodopes.

Local tip
Leave the main road and spend time walking through the quieter cobbled lanes on both sides of the river. Some of the best views of the traditional houses, stone roofs and arched bridges appear away from the central square.
