The story

Kovachevitsa lies in the Western Rhodope Mountains near Gotse Delchev and is known for its distinctive traditional architecture. The village is recognized as a historical and architectural reserve, with two- and three-storey houses built from stone and wood, many covered with heavy stone-slab roofs. Its narrow, steep cobbled streets and preserved Revival-era character create one of the most atmospheric village settings in the Rhodopes. Kovachevitsa has also attracted generations of photographers and filmmakers because of its authentic appearance and dramatic mountain surroundings.

Why go

For one of Bulgaria's best-preserved traditional village landscapes, with stone houses, wooden balconies, cobbled streets and a strong sense of Rhodope history.
