The story
The Belogradchik Rocks are one of Bulgaria's most remarkable natural landmarks. The formations extend through the landscape around the town of Belogradchik and have been shaped by natural processes over roughly 200 million years. Their distinctive reddish colour comes from iron oxides in the rock. Erosion has created an extraordinary landscape of towers, cliffs, pillars and unusual silhouettes, with some formations rising to around 100 metres. Many of the rocks have acquired traditional names inspired by the shapes people see in them. Together with the surrounding hills and the nearby Belogradchik Fortress, they create one of the most recognizable landscapes in northwestern Bulgaria.
