The story
Beglik Tash is an ancient Thracian megalithic sanctuary near Primorsko on Bulgaria's southern Black Sea coast. Hidden in a forested landscape near Maslen Nos, the site consists of enormous naturally formed and arranged stone blocks that were used as part of a sacred ritual complex. Among the most distinctive features are a rock-cut altar, a massive stone believed to have served as a main altar, a stone throne and formations associated with observation of the sun and the changing seasons. The arrangement of some of the stones has been interpreted as functioning as a calendar and sundial, while archaeological evidence shows that the area had an important ritual role for the ancient Thracian population. Today Beglik Tash combines archaeology, mythology and nature in one of the most unusual cultural sites near Bulgaria's Black Sea coast.

Local tip
Walk slowly through the entire sanctuary instead of stopping only at the largest stones. Some of the most interesting details are the smaller rock-cut features and the changing alignments between the stones as you move around the site.
